This is unbelievably true. Ever since I got my Diploma in Hospitality management I haven’t been able to get a job as a waiter or bar-man. Before that it was pretty easy. Its like they think “this person has brains and might challenge us for proper working conditions” or “they won’t be able to learn how to do things our way instead of the TAFE way.” Cannot wait until uni starts so I can get out of this industry. Can’t get a food n bev job without 2-3 years experience in a FnB job. Can’t get a management job without 3-5 years experience in a FnB job. Diploma counts for nothing.
Then I finally learn; its who you know, not what you know.
It’s more likely a “this person will shortly be looking for a promotion and the only role available is mine” scenario.
Good luck at Uni, what are you studying?
I’ve been passed over for seeming ‘overqualified’. *However*, I have observed while hiring my own staff that the two most gloriously and staggeringly incapable, failing in flames, total washout, candidates I ever interviewed were also the only two PhDs I ever interviewed. I continue to hope but without much expectation. I would like to hire people who can surpass me, and scraps of paper don’t seem to have much to do with it.
I’ve personally been worried about the PhD thing. I have a Masters and was thinking of studying again and while the idea of a research doctorate is appealling, I am worried about being branded an academic (not that I think it’s a bad thing, more that others will). I’ll probably end up doing another Masters.
I dont hire degrees.
I hire people who I can get along with and who seem keen to use whatever talents they can bring to bear to get things moving ahead. Being able to have a heart-to-heart about sort what priorities are critical is the big decider in “who I get along with”.
However “dropping the bricks” in the middle of a running project does not count as “getting along with” and falls more into “a pain in the butt to have around”
when you say you don’t hire degrees, are you saying that you don’t hire people just because they have one (good idea) or you don’t hire people because they have one (imho, not so good an idea)?
I have rejected people with high paper qualifications as they had zero experience… The dude just reeked of desperation.
I have also “dumbed down” my resume when I was looking for a “lower grade” position (this was whilst travelling). That didn’t work so well though, as they kept having me taking on additional duties!
