    The caption is true, but the content is a little more debatable. There are bad managers who know that hiring competent people to cover for their own weaknesses is a survival strategy.

      And there are even worse managers that are afraid of competent people because they’re afraid they’ll be “found out.”

    This makes me wonder about the converse: what does it mean if nearly every person i’ve ever worked for has been savvy, compassionate, and good-natured?

    Not enough smart people (and certainly not ones wanting to be a boss) in the world. Also, you could be smarter about your place of employment. The people you want to emulate -coworkers-, should be the ones who are slightly better than you anyway. Not your boss, he/she/they should simply be doing other things and ask for feedback.
